Aktinisäikeet, also known as actin filaments or F-actin, are crucial components of the cytoskeleton in eukaryotic cells. They are dynamic polymers composed of the globular protein actin, also referred to as G-actin. These filaments form a network within the cytoplasm, providing structural support, enabling cell movement, and playing a vital role in various cellular processes.

The formation of actin filaments, known as polymerization, involves the assembly of individual G-actin monomers into a helical filament. This process is highly regulated and can occur rapidly in response to cellular signals. Actin filaments are polarized, with a distinct plus end (barbed end) where polymerization is favored and a minus end (pointed end) where depolymerization can occur. This dynamic assembly and disassembly allow cells to rapidly remodel their cytoskeletal structure.

Aktinisäikeet are involved in a wide array of cellular functions. They are essential for cell shape and mechanical strength, forming a supportive meshwork beneath the plasma membrane. In muscle cells, actin filaments interact with myosin motor proteins to generate the force required for contraction. They are also critical for cell motility, driving processes like amoeboid movement and the formation of lamellipodia and filopodia. Furthermore, actin filaments are involved in intracellular transport, cell division (cytokinesis), and signal transduction pathways. The precise organization and regulation of actin cytoskeleton are fundamental to cell viability and function.
