Akkommodatsioon

Akkommodatsioon is a term used in psychology and education to describe the process of adapting one's existing mental frameworks or schemas to accommodate new information that does not fit neatly into those schemas. This concept is central to the theories of cognitive development proposed by Jean Piaget. When an individual encounters new experiences or data that contradict their current understanding of the world, they can either assimilate the information (try to fit it into existing schemas) or, if assimilation is not possible, engage in akkommodatsioon.

Akkommodatsioon involves modifying or creating new schemas to incorporate the novel information. This adjustment allows for a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of reality. For example, a child who has only seen dogs might initially assimilate a cat into their "dog" schema, noting similarities like four legs and fur. However, when the cat exhibits distinct behaviors like purring or climbing trees, the child must engage in akkommodatsioon, creating a new schema for "cat" that differentiates it from "dog." This process is essential for cognitive growth, enabling individuals to learn and adapt to increasingly complex environments. It represents a shift in understanding, rather than just an addition of knowledge.
