Aitotumaisten refers to a domain of life that includes all organisms whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. This is in contrast to prokaryotes, which lack these structures. The defining characteristic of eukaryotic cells is the presence of a nucleus, which encloses the cell's genetic material.

The domain Eukaryota is incredibly diverse and encompasses a vast array of life forms, from single-celled organisms like amoebas and paramecia to multicellular organisms such as plants, animals, and fungi. These organisms are broadly classified into four kingdoms: Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. The evolutionary history of eukaryotes is complex, with evidence suggesting that the origin of key organelles like mitochondria and chloroplasts involved endosymbiosis, where one prokaryotic cell was engulfed by another.

Eukaryotic cells exhibit a high degree of internal organization due to their organelles, which perform specialized functions. For example, mitochondria are responsible for cellular respiration and energy production, while chloroplasts in plant cells and some protists are involved in photosynthesis. The presence of a cytoskeleton within eukaryotic cells provides structural support, allows for cell movement, and facilitates the transport of materials within the cell.
