The term appears in fictional field guides and science fiction lore as a distinct taxon within a broader fictional biota.

Adults are 2–6 cm long, soft-bodied, with translucent bodies and a row of bioluminescent photophores along each side. They possess multiple slender tentacles around a broad mantle and feed by filtering microbial mats and small invertebrates. The body plan combines traits reminiscent of soft-bodied marine invertebrates with adaptations for a low-light cave habitat.

Aineaalloja populations inhabit still, low-light pools in karst caves. They exhibit diel light cycles synchronized with lunar and hydrological cues.
