Aigialeia

Aigialeia is a municipality in the Achaea regional unit of Western Greece, Greece. It is located in the northern part of the Peloponnese along the Gulf of Corinth, spanning coastal towns and inland communities. The administrative seat is the town of Aigio (Aigion). The landscape combines low-lying coastal plains with foothills and mountains inland, including parts of the northern Peloponnese range, and features areas of agricultural activity and natural scenery along the coast.

Historically, the area has ancient settlements dating to classical times and was part of the Achaean League. Over the centuries it developed as a regional hub for trade, agriculture, and maritime activity. The modern municipality was formed in 2011 under the Kallikratis reform by merging several former municipalities and communities, reflecting the administrative reorganization in Greece.

Economy in Aigialeia is based on agriculture—particularly citrus fruits and olives—fishing, and small-scale industry, with tourism playing a growing role due to its beaches, coastline, and accessible hinterland. The region is served by road networks and a railway connection that links Aigio with other parts of the Peloponnese; the interior features routes to mountainous areas and wooded gorges, such as the nearby Vouraikos Gorge and Kalavryta region.

Notable attractions include coastal promenades and beaches along the Gulf of Corinth, traditional towns and churches, and natural scenery in the inland valleys and gorges. Aigialeia continues to function as a local center for commerce, culture, and transportation within the Achaea region.
