Agronomy is the scientific discipline that studies the production and management of crops for food, feed, fiber, and fuel. It seeks to maximize crop yields and quality while maintaining soil health and environmental sustainability. The field integrates knowledge from soil science, crop science, plant nutrition, physiology, and meteorology to inform practical decisions on farms and research stations.

Core activities include soil fertility management, irrigation scheduling, crop rotation and cover cropping, weed control, and pest and disease management. Agronomists also study nutrient cycling, fertilizer use efficiency, and irrigation water management to minimize environmental impacts. Plant breeding, seed selection, and adaptation of genetic varieties are coordinated with agronomic practices to suit local climate and soil conditions.

Historically, agronomy emerged with the development of modern agriculture in the 20th century, combining scientific research with farm practices. The term derives from the Greek agros (field) and nomos (law). Major milestones include the Green Revolution, which linked improved varieties with optimized agronomic practices to increase yields.

Subfields include crop science, soil science, weed science, pest management, irrigation engineering, and agricultural extension. Practitioners work in universities, government agencies, agribusiness, or on farms, advising on production systems, sustainability, and policy.

Current trends emphasize precision agriculture, climate-resilient farming, soil health, reduced fertilizer and pesticide usage, and data-driven decision making to improve efficiency and environmental outcomes.
