Agariste

Agariste was an ancient Greek woman, the daughter of Cleisthenes, the tyrant of Athens. Her father is famously known for his reforms that established the Athenian democracy. Agariste was a significant figure due to her lineage and her marriages, which connected prominent Athenian families.

Her first husband was Megacles, a member of the powerful Alcmaeonid family. Through this marriage, Agariste became the mother of Cleisthenes, the one who further developed the Athenian democratic system. This lineage made her a key figure in the history of Athenian political development.

After Megacles' death, Agariste married Hippocrates, another Athenian nobleman. With Hippocrates, she had a son named Cleisthenes, who was also a prominent figure in Athenian politics. Agariste's life, therefore, spanned a crucial period of Athenian history, witnessing and participating in the rise of democracy. Her descendants played significant roles in shaping Athenian society and governance for generations. She is primarily remembered for her role as the mother of influential political reformers and her connection to the Alcmaeonid clan, which held considerable sway in Athenian affairs.
