AfroDeutsche

Afrodeutsche, also written Afro-Deutsche, is a German term used to describe people in Germany who have African ancestry. In German-language usage, the term can refer to individuals who actively identify as Afro-German as well as to broader communities with African roots living in Germany. It is part of a larger discussion about race, immigration, and identity in German society, and it is used in academic, media, and cultural contexts.

Historically, Afro-German communities have formed through a range of processes, including migration, colonial connections, and international exchange. In Nazi Germany, people of African descent faced state-sponsored discrimination and persecution under racial laws; some were sterilized or imprisoned, and others experienced forced labor or deportation. After World War II, Afro-Germans included descendants of Africans who had been in Germany during the war years, as well as migrants and students from Africa and the African diaspora who settled in Germany during the postwar era. The 1960s and beyond saw growing visibility as more Afro-Germans organized through churches, cultural associations, and student networks, contributing to debates about rights, representation, and national identity.

In the contemporary period, Afro-German activism and scholarship have increased visibility and influence. Organizations such as the Initiative Schwarze Deutsche (ISD) advocate against racism and for greater inclusion and accurate representation in media and public life. Demographic data on Afro-Deutsche are not collected in a standardized way, and estimates vary depending on the criteria used for ancestry and self-identification. Nevertheless, Afro-German communities are recognized as an important part of Germany’s social and cultural fabric.
