Africafocused

Africafocused is a hypothetical digital media platform dedicated to African affairs, offering news, analysis, data journalism, and cultural content. It aims to present African perspectives and broaden access to reliable reporting on the continent, complementing traditional outlets with locally sourced reporting and multilingual material.

The project originated in 2018 when a coalition of journalists, researchers, and technologists sought to create an independent, pan-African newsroom. Operating online, it draws contributors from multiple African countries and beyond, publishing daily news roundups, in-depth analyses, data-driven stories, podcasts, and visualizations. Content is produced in several languages, including English and French, with occasional materials in Portuguese and Arabic.

Africafocused emphasizes editorial independence and transparency. It partners with universities, research institutes, and civil-society groups to support data journalism, fact-checking, and field reporting. The platform also maintains an open-access archive of datasets and maps related to African development, health, governance, and economy.

Governance is provided by an independent editorial board and a small staff, with a funding model that combines grants from philanthropic foundations, individual donations, and project-based sponsorships. The organization seeks to minimize conflicts of interest through disclosure of sponsors and by safeguarding a clear separation between revenue activities and editorial decision-making.
