Aeglane

Aeglane is a coastal city-state on the eastern shore of the continent of Eldara. It functions as a regional hub for commerce, trade routes, and maritime culture. The name Aeglane is thought to derive from an old harbor term meaning "anchor," though etymologies vary and no single interpretation is universally accepted.

Founded in the 9th century by maritime guilds, Aeglane developed as a republic with a mercantile constitution. It expanded along the coast and across sea lanes, surviving periods of external domination before achieving autonomous status in the late medieval period. In modern times it remains a constituent city-state within the Federated Republic of Eldara, retaining substantial self-government.

The economy centers on glassmaking, shipbuilding, and port-based commerce, with citrus agriculture in nearby hinterlands. The port hosts a diverse population, with Aeglan as the official language and several minority dialects. Cultural life emphasizes craft guilds, public festivals, music, and nautical lore; education and research are supported by the University of Aeglane and related institutes.

Governance combines a city council elected by residents with a ceremonial mayor who presides over civic events and foreign relations. Notable landmarks include the Glassspire, a towering glass structure that serves as a beacon and symbol; the Old Docks, the historic waterfront quarter; and the University of Aeglane, known for maritime studies and humanities.
