Adszorbánsok, often translated as adsorbents, are solid materials with a porous structure that can attract and hold other molecules on their surface. This process is called adsorption. Adsorbents are characterized by their large surface area to volume ratio, which is crucial for their effectiveness. They are typically inorganic compounds, but organic materials can also be used.

Common examples of adsorbents include activated carbon, zeolites, silica gel, and activated alumina. Activated carbon, produced by heating organic materials like wood or coal in the absence of air, is widely used due to its high porosity and affinity for organic molecules. Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicates with a well-defined pore structure, making them selective adsorbents. Silica gel, a form of silicon dioxide, is known for its ability to adsorb water vapor. Activated alumina is another common desiccant.

The applications of adsorbents are diverse. They are used in purification processes to remove impurities from liquids and gases, such as in water treatment to remove contaminants and in air filters to eliminate odors. In the pharmaceutical industry, they are used to remove byproducts during drug manufacturing. Adsorbents also play a role in catalysis, where they can act as supports for active catalytic species. Furthermore, they are employed in chromatography for separating mixtures of compounds. The choice of adsorbent depends on the specific substance to be adsorbed and the conditions of the process.
