Adsorptiomenetelmät refers to a group of separation techniques that rely on the principle of adsorption. Adsorption is a surface phenomenon where atoms, molecules, or ions from a substance accumulate on the surface of another substance, known as the adsorbent. This binding occurs due to various intermolecular forces, such as van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, or electrostatic interactions. The substance being adsorbed is called the adsorbate.

These methods are widely used in various industrial and laboratory applications for purification, separation, and concentration of substances. Key advantages of adsorption methods include their effectiveness in removing trace impurities, their ability to operate at ambient temperatures and pressures in many cases, and the potential for regeneration of the adsorbent material, making them economically viable and environmentally friendly.

Commonly used adsorbents include activated carbon, zeolites, silica gel, and alumina. The choice of adsorbent depends on the specific application and the chemical properties of the adsorbate and the matrix from which it is to be separated. For instance, activated carbon is effective for removing organic compounds from water and air, while zeolites are often used for gas separation and dehydration.

The process typically involves passing a fluid phase (liquid or gas) containing the adsorbate through a bed of the solid adsorbent. The adsorbate selectively binds to the surface of the adsorbent, effectively removing it from the fluid. Once the adsorbent becomes saturated with the adsorbate, it can be regenerated, usually by changing the temperature, pressure, or by using a desorbent to release the adsorbed substance, allowing for reuse of the adsorbent. This regeneration step is crucial for the economic feasibility of continuous industrial processes.
