Adiposyyttejätyyppejä refers to the different types of adipocytes, or fat cells, found in the body. These cells are specialized for storing energy in the form of fat. The primary distinction is between white adipocytes and brown adipocytes, though beige adipocytes also exist.

White adipocytes are the most common type and are characterized by a large lipid droplet that occupies most of the cell's volume, pushing the nucleus and cytoplasm to the periphery. Their main function is to store energy as triglycerides. These cells also play a role in endocrine signaling, secreting hormones like leptin and adiponectin that regulate metabolism and appetite. White adipose tissue is found throughout the body and plays a crucial role in insulation and organ protection.

Brown adipocytes, in contrast, are smaller and contain numerous small lipid droplets, as well as a higher density of mitochondria. These mitochondria are rich in iron, giving brown adipose tissue its characteristic color. The primary function of brown adipocytes is thermogenesis, or heat production. When activated, they can burn fat to generate heat, which is important for maintaining body temperature, especially in infants and hibernating animals.

Beige adipocytes, also known as brite adipocytes, are a distinct population that can be found within white adipose tissue. They share some characteristics of both white and brown adipocytes, and can be induced to undergo "browning" under certain conditions, such as prolonged exposure to cold or exercise. This process allows white adipose tissue to increase its thermogenic capacity. The precise origin and regulation of beige adipocytes are still areas of active research.
