Adhesivesuch

Adhesivesuch (Latin: Adhesusu cetum) is an extinct genus of semi‑aquatic crocodylomorph that lived during the Late Jurassic period. The only known species, Adhesivesuch interstitialis, was discovered in the Morrison Formation of North America. The creature measured about 2.5 metres in length and possessed specialized toe pads and a flattened tail, enabling it to cling to wet rock faces in shallow river valleys. Scientists infer that this adaptation was used for ambush predation and for protection against strong currents.

The adhesive toe pads contain a dense network of keratinised setae, analogous to those found in modern geckos. Comparative analysis of the fossilised phalanges shows micro‑structural similarities with the melanosomes of extant amphibious reptiles. The genus is classified within the family Alligatoroidea, although it diverges morphologically from other early crocodyliforms by its unique dermal armour and ventral notch.

In the palaeoecological context, Adhesivesuch coexisted with early dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus and large sauropods. Stable isotope studies suggest it fed primarily on fish and invertebrates, occasionally supplementing with small terrestrial vertebrates. Evidence of bite marks on bone fragments found in the same strata indicates that Adhesivesuch may have competed with other crocodyliforms for aquatic resources.

The name "adhesivesuch" originates from the Greek adhesive, meaning "to stick," and the Latin suchus, meaning "crocodile." Contemporary research on the adhesive mechanisms of Adhesivesuch could inform the design of synthetic biomimetic adhesives used in wet environments.
