Additiivien

Additiivien is the Finnish plural genitive form of additiivi, a term used to refer to additives—substances deliberately added to foods or other products to affect their properties. In everyday Finnish usage, lisäaineet is the more common term, but additiivien appears in some technical or historical texts.

In food science, additiivit are used to preserve quality, improve texture, adjust flavor or color, and aid processing. They encompass categories such as antioxidants (to prevent oxidation), preservatives (to inhibit spoilage), colorants (to impart or restore color), flavor enhancers, emulsifiers and stabilizers (to improve texture and mixing), thickeners, and sweeteners. Some additives act as processing aids and are present in trace amounts without being intended as ingredients.
