Atomicity guarantees that all operations within a transaction are performed entirely or not at all. Consistency ensures that a transaction brings the database from one valid state to another. Isolation means that concurrent transactions do not interfere with each other, making it appear as though they are executed sequentially. Durability ensures that once a transaction has been committed, its changes are permanent and will survive any subsequent system failures.

Transactions are crucial for maintaining the reliability of databases. For instance, in a banking system, transferring money from one account to another involves multiple operations: debiting one account and crediting another. If the debit succeeds but the credit fails, the system would be in an inconsistent state. A transaction ensures that both operations either complete successfully or neither does, preventing such inconsistencies. Database systems employ various mechanisms, such as logging and locking, to manage and enforce these transaction properties.
