Adaptationalismista is a concept in evolutionary biology that emphasizes the role of natural selection in shaping organisms. It posits that many, if not all, of an organism's traits are adaptations that have evolved because they confer a survival or reproductive advantage. Proponents of adaptationalism often focus on explaining the function and adaptive value of specific features.

This perspective suggests that complex structures and behaviors observed in nature are the result of gradual refinement through natural selection over vast periods. For example, the intricate design of an eye or the specialized beak of a bird might be explained by how each component and characteristic contributed to the organism's ability to survive and reproduce in its environment. However, it is important to note that the strict interpretation of adaptationalism has faced scrutiny. Critics argue that it can sometimes lead to an overemphasis on adaptation, potentially overlooking other evolutionary mechanisms such as genetic drift, developmental constraints, or exaptation, where a trait evolved for one purpose and was later co-opted for another.
