In theory, actualizationturning comprises three interacting elements: potential, turning, and actualization. Potential denotes feasible states or outcomes not yet realized. Turning marks the moment of commitment, when attention or resources are redirected toward a selected possibility. Actualization is the execution of that choice, producing concrete outcomes that may, in turn, create new potentials.

Process and practice involve generating a portfolio of potential futures, evaluating them against constraints and values, selecting one by turning toward it, and implementing through iterative cycles. Feedback from outcomes informs adjustments to both the plan and the set of potential futures.

Applications appear in personal development, entrepreneurship, design thinking, and AI planning. Practitioners map potentials, perform deliberate turning to commit to a course, and prototype outcomes, using iteration and feedback to refine future potentials.

Criticisms concern vagueness and the absence of standardized definitions, which hinder rigorous measurement. Some writers warn that emphasis on action can undervalue deliberation or ethics, and that what constitutes a deliberate turning can reflect cultural or personal biases.
