Acetylcholinergic

Acetylcholinergic refers to anything that involves or is related to acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter, which is a chemical messenger that nerve cells use to communicate with each other and with other cells in the body. It plays a crucial role in various physiological processes, including muscle contraction, memory, learning, and attention.

Acetylcholinergic pathways are networks of neurons that use acetylcholine as their primary neurotransmitter. Drugs or substances that affect the acetylcholinergic system are known as acetylcholinergic agents. These can either mimic the effects of acetylcholine (agonists) or block its action (antagonists). Many medications, including some used to treat Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, and certain muscle disorders, work by targeting the acetylcholinergic system.
