Acetabuli
Acetabuli refers to the plural form of acetabulum, which is a cup-shaped socket in the pelvis that articulates with the head of the femur to form the hip joint. This crucial anatomical structure is found in the pelvic bone of many vertebrates, including humans. The acetabulum is composed of portions of the ilium, ischium, and pubis, which are the three bones that fuse to form the hip bone. Its deep, rounded cavity is lined with cartilage, allowing for smooth and stable movement of the hip. The acetabulum also features a ring of fibrocartilage called the acetabular labrum, which deepens the socket and enhances the stability of the hip joint. Disruptions to the acetabulum, such as fractures or developmental abnormalities, can lead to significant pain, limited mobility, and conditions like hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis. Surgical interventions, including hip replacement, often involve addressing issues within the acetabulum.
