Accumulatori

Accumulatori, a term derived from the Latin word for "gatherer" or "collector," generally refers to devices or systems designed to store energy. In a broad sense, this can encompass a variety of technologies, but it is most commonly associated with electrical energy storage. The fundamental principle behind an accumulator is the conversion of one form of energy into another for later retrieval and use.

The most prevalent type of accumulator is the rechargeable battery. These devices employ electrochemical reactions to store electrical energy as chemical potential energy. When a current flows, the stored chemical energy is converted back into electrical energy. Different types of rechargeable batteries exist, each with varying characteristics in terms of energy density, power output, lifespan, and cost, such as lead-acid, lithium-ion, and nickel-metal hydride.

Beyond batteries, other forms of accumulators exist. Mechanical accumulators, for instance, store energy through physical means. Flywheels, which are rotating masses, store kinetic energy that can be released when needed. Hydraulic accumulators store energy in compressed fluids. Thermal accumulators store heat energy, often in materials that can absorb and release heat over time. The specific application dictates the most suitable type of accumulator.
