Absorbanssiarvona, often translated as absorbance value, is a fundamental concept in spectrophotometry and analytical chemistry. It quantifies the amount of light absorbed by a sample at a specific wavelength. The absorbance value is a dimensionless quantity and is directly proportional to the concentration of the absorbing substance in the sample and the path length of the light beam through the sample. This relationship is described by the Beer-Lambert Law.

A higher absorbance value indicates that more light is being absorbed by the sample, meaning there is a greater concentration of the light-absorbing species present. Conversely, a lower absorbance value signifies less absorption and a lower concentration. Absorbance values are typically measured within a range, for example, from 0 to 1 or 0 to 2, depending on the instrument's capabilities and the sample's properties. An absorbance of 0 means that no light is absorbed, and the sample is completely transparent to that wavelength. An absorbance of 1 signifies that 10% of the incident light is transmitted, while 90% is absorbed.

The absorbance value is crucial for quantitative analysis, allowing scientists to determine the concentration of unknown samples by comparing their absorbance to that of known standards.
