Abschuppung

Abschuppung is a German term that translates to "desquamation" or "shedding of scales" in English. It refers to the natural process of the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, shedding dead cells. This process is a continuous renewal of the skin's surface. Normally, these dead cells are shed so gradually that they are not noticeable.

The rate of Abschuppung can vary depending on several factors. Age is one such factor; skin cell turnover slows down as people get older. Environmental conditions, such as humidity and temperature, can also influence how quickly skin sheds. Certain skin conditions or irritations can lead to an accelerated or more visible Abschuppung. For instance, after a sunburn, the damaged skin will often peel off in noticeable flakes. Fungal infections like psoriasis or eczema can also cause increased shedding and scaling.

While a certain amount of Abschuppung is normal and healthy, excessive or abnormal shedding may indicate an underlying issue. Treatments for conditions causing excessive Abschuppung often focus on reducing inflammation and restoring the skin barrier. Moisturizing is also important to help manage dry, flaky skin resulting from this shedding process.
