Abruzzesi

Abruzzesi are the inhabitants of Abruzzo, a region of central Italy on the Adriatic coast. The term is used for people from Abruzzo as well as for things associated with the region. The landscape combines parts of the Apennine mountains with a short coastline, including the Gran Sasso d’Italia. Abruzzo is divided into four provinces: L’Aquila (the regional capital), Chieti, Pescara, and Teramo.

The population is concentrated along the coastal plain and in major towns such as Pescara and L’Aquila. The local speech comprises varieties of the Central Italian dialect group, collectively known as Abruzzese, though standard Italian is used in education and media. Cultural identity is expressed through festivals, crafts, and a distinctive regional cuisine that features arrosticini (grilled lamb skewers), maccheroni alla chitarra, and wines such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.

Abruzzo has ancient roots with Italic peoples such as the Samnites before the Roman era. In the modern era, the region experienced significant emigration to the Americas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The economy historically relied on agriculture and shepherding, and today includes manufacturing, services, and tourism, drawn to mountains, national parks, and the Adriatic coast.

Notable people associated with Abruzzo include Gabriele d’Annunzio, the poet and nationalist born in Pescara. The region is known for its natural parks, including the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, and for its wines and agricultural products.
