Abfalldeponierung refers to the process of storing waste, particularly non-hazardous solid waste, in a landfill or a similar storage facility. This method of waste disposal involves burying the waste in a carefully prepared site, where it is allowed to decompose and settle over time.

The process of Abfalldeponierung typically begins with the selection of a suitable site for the landfill. This site is chosen based on its geological stability, accessibility, and distance from populated areas and water sources. Once the site is selected, the area is prepared by excavating the terrain to the required depth and building a liner system to prevent waste from leaking into surrounding soil and groundwater.

The waste to be disposed of is then transported to the landfill and spread out in a layer, typically about 10-20 centimeters thick. This layer is then compacted using heavy machinery to minimize space and prevent settlement. The process is repeated, with each new layer of waste being spread, compacted, and covered with a layer of soil.

Abfalldeponierung is a widely used method of solid waste disposal, as it is relatively simple, cost-effective, and can be performed with minimal sophisticated equipment. However, it has several drawbacks, including the risk of environmental contamination from leachate, a toxic liquid that can seep into groundwater, and the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
