Abacaviravhengige

Abacaviravhengige is a term heard in some Norwegian-language discussions to describe people who rely on abacavir as part of their antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1 infection. It is not a formal medical diagnosis or a defined clinical category in international guidelines. In clinical practice, abacavir is prescribed within combination ART, and there is no evidence of addictive properties or withdrawal syndrome. The idea of dependence here reflects a reliance on effective ART to maintain viral suppression and immune health over the lifelong course of HIV management.

Abacavir is used in fixed-dose combinations with other antiretrovirals, such as abacavir/lamivudine, or in three-drug regimens such as abacavir/lamivudine/dolutegravir. Initiating therapy requires screening for the HLA-B*57:01 allele due to the risk of a severe hypersensitivity reaction. If hypersensitivity is suspected, abacavir must be stopped immediately. Common adverse effects include nausea, headache, and fatigue; serious but rare risks include hypersensitivity, lactic acidosis, and hepatic toxicity.

In practice, individuals described as "abacavir-dependent" typically need ongoing medical supervision to maintain an effective ART regimen, monitor viral load, and adjust therapy in response to resistance or intolerance. The term remains informal and is not used as a clinical diagnosis; care focuses on adherence, safety, and achieving durable viral suppression.
