Aaltotoimintofunktiot, known in English as wave functions, are central to quantum mechanics. They mathematically describe the quantum state of a system, such as an electron or a photon. The wave function itself, often denoted by the Greek letter psi (ψ), is a complex-valued function that contains all the probabilistic information about the system.

The square of the absolute value of the wave function, |ψ|², represents the probability density of finding a particle at a particular point in space and time. This means that we cannot determine the exact position and momentum of a quantum particle simultaneously, a concept known as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Instead, quantum mechanics provides probabilities for different outcomes.

Wave functions are solutions to the Schrödinger equation, a fundamental equation in quantum mechanics that describes how the wave function of a system evolves over time. The specific form of the wave function depends on the system's potential energy and initial conditions. Different wave functions correspond to different quantum states, such as different energy levels of an atom.

The concept of superposition is also closely related to wave functions. A quantum system can exist in a combination of multiple states simultaneously, and this superposition is represented by a linear combination of the wave functions corresponding to those states. When a measurement is made, the wave function "collapses" into one of the possible states.
