AM Radiolähetyksissä, often referred to as AM broadcasting, is a terrestrial radio transmission technology that has been a cornerstone of radio communication for over a century. The term "AM" stands for Amplitude Modulation, the method used to encode audio signals onto a radio wave. In AM broadcasting, the amplitude of the carrier wave, which is a radio frequency signal, is varied in proportion to the waveform of the audio signal being transmitted. This variation in amplitude carries the sound information.

AM radio waves have a longer wavelength and lower frequency compared to FM (Frequency Modulation) radio waves. This characteristic allows AM signals to travel further, especially during nighttime hours when the ionosphere reflects them, enabling long-distance reception. However, AM broadcasting is more susceptible to atmospheric disturbances and electrical interference, which can result in static and a lower fidelity audio quality compared to FM.

Historically, AM radio was the primary medium for news, entertainment, and music. While FM radio gained popularity due to its superior sound quality and resistance to interference, AM radio continues to be important for talk radio, sports broadcasts, and in regions where its long-range capabilities are essential. The infrastructure for AM broadcasting is well-established globally, and it remains a vital part of the radio spectrum.
