AMmikorrhízában

AMmikorrhízában refers to the state of being in symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This is a widespread and ancient mutualistic association between soil fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota and the roots of most vascular plants. The term "AMmikorrhízában" itself is a Hungarian word, translating to "in AM mycorrhiza" or "under AM mycorrhizal association."

In this symbiotic relationship, the AMF colonize the plant's root system. The fungi extend their hyphae into the soil, greatly increasing the surface area available for nutrient and water absorption, particularly for phosphorus and other less mobile nutrients. These absorbed nutrients are then transferred to the plant. In return, the plant provides the fungi with carbohydrates, primarily sugars produced during photosynthesis.

This mutualistic exchange benefits both partners. Plants inoculated with AMF often exhibit enhanced growth, improved drought tolerance, and increased resistance to pathogens. The fungi, in turn, receive a steady supply of carbon compounds essential for their survival and reproduction. AM mycorrhizal associations are crucial for the health and productivity of many ecosystems, playing a significant role in nutrient cycling and plant community dynamics. The presence of AMF is widespread across terrestrial environments, making this a fundamental ecological interaction.
