AMlähetys refers to Amplitude Modulation broadcasting, a method of transmitting radio signals. In this system, the amplitude, or strength, of the radio wave is varied in accordance with the audio signal being transmitted. This is in contrast to Frequency Modulation (FM), where the frequency of the carrier wave is altered. AM broadcasts are susceptible to various forms of interference, including static caused by lightning or electrical disturbances, which can alter the amplitude of the signal.

AM broadcasting historically played a significant role in early radio communication, allowing for widespread transmission of voice and music. The development of AM technology paved the way for mass media as we know it. While FM offers superior audio fidelity and is less prone to static, AM remains in use for certain applications, such as long-distance broadcasting due to its ability to propagate over greater distances, especially at night. The lower frequencies used in AM also contribute to this extended range.

The process of AM transmission involves a transmitter that combines the audio signal with a high-frequency carrier wave. At the receiving end, a radio receiver demodulates the signal, separating the audio information from the carrier wave. AM radio continues to be a valuable tool for news, talk radio, and emergency broadcasts in many parts of the world.
