AIEE

The American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) was a professional organization for electrical engineers in the United States. Founded in 1884, it aimed to advance the theory and practice of electricity and electronic engineering and to promote professional standards and education. The organization organized technical meetings and annual conventions, maintained local sections, and published scholarly papers through its Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. It also contributed to the development of engineering standards and best practices through committees and collaboration with industry and academia.

In 1963, the AIEE merged with the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), another professional body, to form the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The merger combined the AIEE's emphasis on electrical power and systems with the IRE's focus on radio engineering and electronics, creating a broader professional society that continues to oversee publications, standards, and professional development.

Membership included engineers in industry, academia, and government, and the organization supported education, scholarships, and professional credentials. The AIEE's legacy persists within IEEE, particularly in its standards development process and technical societies.
