AFPcapable

AFPcapable refers to a network device or software that supports the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP). AFP is a proprietary network file sharing protocol developed by Apple Inc. It is primarily used by macOS and macOS Server for file sharing services. Devices that are AFPcapable can therefore be discovered and accessed by macOS computers for file storage and retrieval over a network.

Support for AFP is typically found on network attached storage (NAS) devices, servers running Apple's server operating systems, and some third-party software solutions. While AFP was once the standard for Mac file sharing, Apple has been transitioning its focus to the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol for newer versions of macOS. However, AFP remains important for compatibility with older macOS versions and for specific use cases.

When a device is AFPcapable, it means it has implemented the necessary AFP services and is configured to accept AFP connections. This allows macOS users to connect to shared folders on these devices, mount them as network drives, and perform standard file operations such as copying, moving, and deleting files. The presence of AFP support is often advertised by manufacturers of NAS devices and other network storage solutions targeting users within an Apple ecosystem.
