ACsähkömoottorin, or AC electric motor, is a type of electric motor that is powered by alternating current. These motors are widely used in a vast array of applications due to their reliability, efficiency, and relatively low cost. The fundamental principle behind their operation involves the interaction of magnetic fields generated by alternating current.

There are two main types of AC electric motors: synchronous and asynchronous (also known as induction motors). In synchronous motors, the rotor rotates at the same speed as the rotating magnetic field of the stator. This synchronization is achieved through various mechanisms, often involving DC excitation of the rotor or permanent magnets. Asynchronous motors, on the other hand, are more common. In these motors, the rotor rotates at a speed slightly slower than the rotating magnetic field, and this difference in speed, called slip, is what induces the current in the rotor and generates torque.

The construction of an AC motor typically involves a stator, which is the stationary part containing windings that create a rotating magnetic field when supplied with AC power, and a rotor, which is the rotating part. The rotor's design varies depending on the motor type. AC motors are crucial components in countless devices, from household appliances like washing machines and refrigerators to industrial machinery, electric vehicles, and power generation systems. Their versatility and performance characteristics make them indispensable in modern technology.
