ACsignalering

ACsignalering, also known as Alternating Current signaling, is a method used in railway signaling systems. In this system, alternating current is used to power the signal lamps and also to transmit control information. This contrasts with direct current (DC) signaling, where direct current is used for both purposes.

One of the primary advantages of AC signaling is its ability to transmit power and information over longer distances with less voltage drop compared to DC systems. This is due to the properties of alternating current. AC signaling also offers better immunity to electrical interference, particularly from stray currents that can be present in the ground.

The components of an AC signaling system typically include transformers to step down the high voltage AC supply to the required levels for signal lamps and control circuits. Relays and other control devices are designed to operate with AC. The color of the signal lamps themselves is usually achieved through filters or colored bulbs, similar to DC systems.

AC signaling systems have been widely adopted in many railway networks, especially for main line operations where consistent and reliable signaling over long stretches is crucial. The development of more advanced signaling technologies has led to the integration of AC principles with modern digital communication and control systems.
