ACROynym

ACROynym is a term referring to an acronym where each letter of the acronym is the first letter of a word in a phrase or sentence, and the letters are pronounced individually. This is distinct from an initialism where the letters are pronounced as a word. For example, FBI is an initialism pronounced eff-bee-eye, while NASA is an acronym pronounced nah-sah. The term ACROynym itself is often used interchangeably with acronym in common parlance, but technically distinguishes this specific pronunciation method.

The formation of ACROynyms can occur organically through common usage or be deliberately created for memorization, emphasis, or branding. Many organizations, government agencies, and technical fields utilize ACROynyms. Examples include SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus), LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation), and RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging).
