Atomicity ensures that a transaction is treated as a single, indivisible unit of work. Either all of its operations are completed successfully, or none of them are. If any part of the transaction fails, the entire transaction is rolled back, leaving the database in its original state.

Consistency guarantees that a transaction brings the database from one valid state to another. It ensures that any data written to the database must be valid according to all defined rules, including constraints, cascades, and triggers.

Isolation ensures that concurrent transactions do not interfere with each other. Each transaction appears to execute as if it were the only transaction running in the system. This prevents issues like dirty reads, non-repeatable reads, and phantom reads.

Durability ensures that once a transaction has been committed, it will remain committed even in the event of a system failure, such as a power outage or crash. The committed data is permanently stored, typically on non-volatile storage.

Adherence to ACID principles is crucial for maintaining data integrity and reliability in applications where accuracy and dependability are paramount, such as financial systems and inventory management. While ACID properties provide strong guarantees, they can sometimes impact performance, leading some systems to adopt BASE (Basically Available, Soft state, Eventually consistent) properties for scenarios where eventual consistency is acceptable.
