ABS is a safety feature designed to prevent the wheels from locking up during braking, thereby maintaining traction and allowing the driver to steer the vehicle while braking hard. This is particularly important on slippery surfaces like ice, snow, or wet roads.

When a driver applies the brakes firmly, sensors monitor the rotational speed of each wheel. If a wheel is detected to be slowing down too rapidly, indicating it's about to lock, the ABS system momentarily reduces the brake pressure to that wheel. This allows the wheel to regain traction before the brake pressure is reapplied. This rapid pulsing of brake pressure, often felt as a vibration in the brake pedal, happens many times per second.
