ABOtypen
ABOtypen is a proposed framework for classifying biological samples based on surface antigen expression patterns, using a standardized panel of antigen-binding reagents. The name blends the familiar ABO terminology with typology to signal a systemic approach to antigen profiles. In this concept, samples are characterized by the presence or absence of defined surface epitopes, allowing assignment to A-type, B-type, AB-type or O-type categories, with potential subtypes to capture finer variation.
Mechanism and workflow: A sample—such as a cultured cell, bacterium, or tissue fragment— is exposed to a
Applications: Proponents see ABOtypen as a tool for rapid strain typing in clinical microbiology, outbreak surveillance,
Status and challenges: The concept remains largely theoretical and is not yet standardized in routine laboratories.
