84698 is a numbered minor planet located in the central region of the main asteroid belt. It was first observed on 28 September 2001 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) survey at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site near Socorro, New Mexico. The provisional designation was 2001 RF12. After additional observations confirmed its orbit, the Minor Planet Center assigned the permanent number 84698 in 2003.

The asteroid orbits the Sun with a semimajor axis of about 2.7 astronomical units (AU). Its orbit has a moderate eccentricity of roughly 0.15, causing the perihelion distance to be around 2.3 AU and the aphelion distance to reach approximately 3.1 AU. The orbital inclination relative to the ecliptic plane is about 5.5 degrees. With an orbital period of approximately 4.4 years, 84698 makes a complete circuit around the Sun every 1605 days. Its mean motion is roughly 0.082 degrees per day.

Photometric observations indicate a rotation period of about 4.1 hours, with a brightness amplitude suggesting a moderately elongated shape. The spectral type is not yet classified, but its albedo appears to lie within the typical range for S-type asteroids. As of the latest database updates, no spacecraft missions have visited 84698, and no significant variations in its orbit have been recorded since its discovery.

The name 84698 remains unassigned; like many numbered asteroids, it is identified only by its numeric designation pending any official naming proposal from its discoverers.
