It was first observed on 28 September 2001 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) survey at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site near Socorro, New Mexico. The provisional designation was 2001 RF12. After additional observations confirmed its orbit, the Minor Planet Center assigned the permanent number 84698 in 2003.
