It was first observed on 11 August 2000 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site in Socorro, New Mexico. The discovery date is recorded in the Minor Planet Center's database as the provisional designation 2000 RJ152. The asteroid was later assigned the permanent designation 63489 following confirmation of its orbital elements.

The orbit of 63489 is moderately eccentric, with a semi-major axis of approximately 2.62 astronomical units and an eccentricity of 0.18. Its orbital inclination relative to the ecliptic plane is roughly 3.4 degrees. The orbital period averages 4.24 years. These parameters place 63489 firmly within the inner part of the outer main belt, where dynamical interactions with the Jupiter resonance zones are common. Its aphelion distance is about 3.12 AU while its perihelion distance is 2.12 AU.

Physical characterization from infrared survey data suggests a diameter of roughly 4.6 kilometers, assuming a typical albedo of 0.15 for stony S‑type asteroids. Spectral analysis indicates a silicate‑rich composition, typical of the middle Hildas. As of the latest publication in 2023, 63489 has not yet received an official name and remains referred to by its numerical designation in catalogs and literature.

Because it has not been singled out by dynamical or compositional studies, 63489 serves as a representative sample of the population of minor bodies in the outer main belt.
