4Hydroxytoluene

4-Hydroxytoluene, commonly known as p-cresol, is an aromatic organic compound with the formula C7H8O. It is a substituted phenol in which a methyl group and a hydroxyl group are para to each other on a benzene ring, and it is also called 4-methylphenol.

P-cresol is a colorless to pale yellow, oily liquid with a distinct phenolic odor. It is sparingly soluble in water and soluble in many organic solvents. It occurs naturally in coal tar and certain essential oils; industrially it is produced on a large scale as a byproduct of coal tar processing or from petroleum-derived aromatics. It serves as a chemical intermediate in a variety of syntheses.

Applications include use as a disinfectant and antiseptic component in some formulations, as well as a precursor in the manufacture of dyes, fragrances, resins, and other chemicals. It is also a component of some wood-preserving creosotes.

Safety and handling: 4-hydroxytoluene is hazardous and should be handled with appropriate precautions. It can cause skin and eye irritation, and exposure may have systemic toxic effects.
