2periodinen, or two-periodic, is a term used in mathematics to describe a function or signal that repeats its values every two units. In common usage, a function f: R -> R is called 2-periodic if its values satisfy f(x+2) = f(x) for all real x.

Definition and basic properties

A function is 2-periodic when translating its input by 2 leaves the output unchanged. The period set of such a function contains 2 and all integer multiples of any smaller positive period. The fundamental (smallest positive) period p, if it exists, must satisfy 2 = n p for some positive integer n; equivalently p = 2/n. Thus a 2-periodic function may have fundamental periods such as 2, 1, 2/3, 1/2, etc., depending on its actual repeating structure.

Examples

Common 2-periodic functions include f(x) = cos(πx) and f(x) = sin(πx), since cos(π(x+2)) = cos(πx + 2π) = cos(πx) and similarly for sine. Another example is f(x) = sin(3πx), which has fundamental period 2/3 but is still 2-periodic because 2 is a multiple of its fundamental period. In discrete contexts, a sequence a_n is 2-periodic if a_{n+2} = a_n for all n.

Context and applications

2-periodicity is a special case of periodicity relevant in analysis and signal processing. It links to Fourier series, where a 2-periodic function can be represented by a series with fundamental angular frequency π. The concept also appears in dynamical systems and in the study of signals with repeating patterns over fixed intervals.
