Industrially, 2-etüülheksanool is synthesized through the oxo process, also known as hydroformylation, followed by aldol condensation and hydrogenation. This process involves reacting propylene with synthesis gas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen) to produce butyraldehyde, which is then dimerized and hydrogenated to form 2-etüülheksanool.

While widely employed, concerns have been raised regarding the potential health and environmental effects of some of its derivatives, particularly phthalate plasticizers.
