1mb is a compact, ambiguous label that can refer to either one megabyte or one megabit, depending on context. In technical writing, capitalization and the presence of B for bytes or b for bits are the usual clues: MB denotes megabytes, Mb denotes megabits. The lowercase form mb is nonstandard and can lead to confusion, so precise usage is important.

If 1mb is intended as one megabyte (MB), the most common modern definitions distinguish decimal and binary prefixes. A decimal megabyte equals 1,000,000 bytes.
