12th6th

12th/6th is a medium infantry brigade of the Australian Army, established in 2000 as part of a major reorganisation of the army. The brigade is based in Townsville, Queensland, and is one of the country's main army posts. Its primary role is to engage in combat operations and other tasks as required by the Chief of the Defence Force.

The brigade consists of various units, including a headquarters and signal squadron, a combat engineer squadron, and mechanised infantry battalions. It is expected to be an expeditionary force capable of projecting force from Australia and from other nations' bases.

In 2016, it was announced that 12th/6th would be reorganised as a standard Light Armoured Brigade, with five mechanised battalions. However, in 2018, the army announced changes to the reorganisation, expanding the brigade to include more Australian and international capabilities. Under the reorganisation, the brigade will be split into three separate battlegroups, each capable of operating independently.

In 2020, 12th/6th performed operations in the Indo-Pacific region, providing force and security support to the region. Its forward presence and forward integration with international partners were assessed to be key factors in protecting national interests and promoting stability.

The brigade's headquarters are located at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, with battalions located within Australia and in the United States. Its artillery and brigade assets are positioned within the North West Region to provide effective combined arms abilities.
