Üledékkötés refers to a natural process where loose mineral particles and organic matter, collectively known as sediment, accumulate and consolidate over time to form solid rock. This process is a fundamental aspect of sedimentary geology and plays a crucial role in shaping the Earth's crust.

The formation of sediment begins with the weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks. Weathering breaks down rocks into smaller fragments, while erosion transports these fragments, along with other loose materials like sand, silt, and clay, through agents such as water, wind, or ice. These transported materials are then deposited in various environments, including oceans, lakes, rivers, and deserts.

Once deposited, layers of sediment can accumulate to significant depths. The weight of the overlying sediment exerts pressure on the lower layers, leading to compaction. Compaction reduces the pore space between sediment grains, squeezing out water and air. Following compaction, cementation occurs. Minerals dissolved in groundwater precipitate in the pore spaces, binding the sediment grains together. Common cementing agents include calcite, silica, and iron oxides.

Over geological time, these processes of deposition, compaction, and cementation transform loose sediment into sedimentary rocks like sandstone, shale, and limestone.
