Öljypalmuöljy, often referred to as palm oil, is a vegetable oil derived from the fruit of the oil palm tree. It is a widely used ingredient in food products, cosmetics, and biofuels. The oil palm tree is native to tropical regions and is now cultivated extensively in Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America.

There are two types of oil extracted from the fruit of the oil palm: crude palm oil and palm kernel oil. Crude palm oil is obtained from the fleshy mesocarp of the fruit and is reddish-orange in color due to its high carotene content. Palm kernel oil, on the other hand, is extracted from the seed or kernel of the fruit and is a lighter color, similar to coconut oil.

Palm oil is a versatile ingredient due to its unique fatty acid composition, which includes both saturated and unsaturated fats. This allows it to function as a solid at room temperature, providing texture and stability in processed foods like baked goods, confectionery, and margarine. It is also a common ingredient in soaps, detergents, and other personal care products.

The production of palm oil has significant environmental and social implications. Large-scale cultivation of oil palms has been linked to deforestation, habitat loss for endangered species, and greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable palm oil production practices, certified by organizations like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), aim to mitigate these negative impacts.
