Æðastíflum, commonly referred to as blood clots, are a significant medical concern. They occur when blood within a vein or artery coagulates, forming a semi-solid mass. This process, known as thrombosis, can obstruct blood flow, leading to a range of health problems.

The formation of blood clots can be triggered by several factors. Injury to the blood vessel wall, such as from trauma or surgery, is a primary cause. Slow blood flow, often due to prolonged immobility like long-distance travel or bed rest, also increases the risk. Additionally, certain medical conditions, including inherited clotting disorders, cancer, and inflammatory diseases, can predispose individuals to thrombosis. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, obesity, and the use of hormonal contraceptives also play a role.

The symptoms of an æðastífla depend on its location. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a clot in a deep vein usually in the legs, can cause swelling, pain, redness, and warmth in the affected limb. Arterial clots can lead to more immediate and severe consequences, such as stroke if in the brain, or heart attack if in the coronary arteries.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. Treatment aims to prevent the clot from growing, reduce the risk of it breaking off and traveling to vital organs, and prevent future clot formation. Anticoagulant medications, often called blood thinners, are the mainstay of treatment. In some cases, clot-dissolving medications or surgical removal of the clot may be necessary. Prevention strategies include regular movement, adequate hydration, and medical interventions for high-risk individuals.
