For example, different plastic types are sorted by resin identification code, and paper is separated from cardboard. After sorting, the materials are baled or otherwise prepared for transport to processing plants.

At the processing plants, the sorted materials undergo specific treatments. Paper is pulped and cleaned, plastics are melted and reformed into pellets, glass is crushed and melted, and metals are smelted. These processed raw materials are then sold to manufacturers. Manufacturers use these recycled materials, often in combination with virgin materials, to produce new products. This completes the loop, as these new products eventually enter the consumption cycle, and the process can begin again.
