Äänimiksaukseen, commonly referred to as audio mixing, is the process of combining and manipulating recorded audio tracks to create a final stereo or surround sound product. This involves adjusting the level, panning, equalization, and dynamic range of each individual track to achieve a balanced and cohesive sound. The goal of mixing is to ensure that all elements of the recording are clear, well-defined, and contribute effectively to the overall artistic vision.

The mixing engineer uses a mixing console or digital audio workstation (DAW) to control various parameters. Level adjustments determine the volume of each instrument or voice. Panning controls the placement of sounds in the stereo field, from left to right. Equalization (EQ) is used to shape the tonal characteristics of sounds, boosting or cutting specific frequencies to enhance clarity, remove unwanted noise, or create a desired sonic texture. Dynamics processing, such as compression and limiting, is employed to control the variation in volume of a signal, making it more consistent or adding impact.

Effects processing is another crucial aspect of audio mixing. Reverb can simulate the acoustic space of a room, while delay can create echoes. Other effects like chorus, flanger, and distortion can be used creatively to alter the sound of instruments or vocals. The mixing process is iterative, often involving listening to the mix on different playback systems and making adjustments until the desired result is achieved. A well-executed audio mix is essential for the professional presentation of music, film, broadcast, and other audio-visual media.
